Series 1, Event 1 - The Journey Begins!

Last weekend 8-9 Oct 2022, the first Sunny Skate Series event took place at Alex Skate Park.

Like most concepts, Sunny Skate Series started out no different. As Mat ‘Chiggy’ Chigwidden and Event Generals Director, Josh Allen sat down over a few beers one afternoon, they started to drum up ideas of a skate event on the Sunshine Coast.

After growing up playing every team sport imaginable and with several years experience organising surfing events, Josh asked Chiggy the simple question of why isn’t there a competition platform for skaters on a regular basis? Surfers have boardrides clubs with monthly comps or they can enter a surf comp somewhere around the country almost every week. Skate comps seems to be few and far between and not overly available to ALL.

Realising they were onto something, Josh and Chiggy came up with the concept of a series that would give skaters an opportunity to skate multiple comps annually and accumulate enough points to eventually become the Series champion in either Street or Bowl disciplines and maybe qualifying for a bigger event!

From here it was on!!!

A venue was chosen…Alex Skate Park, a world-class facility and a beautiful central location with great facilities. Local council saw the vision and helped us out!

Dates were chosen, and evenly spread throughout the year so skaters could plan, train and show up. Sponsors were approached and sponsors saw the vision and passion and jumped aboard. Judges were needed, Chiggy called a few old pals and got the nod from 3 highly reputable skaters in Jackson Pilz, Andrew Brophy & OG skater Andreas Schwitter. Next, someone who knew how to put a skate comp together and run the scoring systems…enter Rumble on the Reef founder Donny! Donny would also offer qualifying spots to our Series winners!

Next, an mad dog MC that lives and breaths Skating…who else but Patty G!

and last but not least, somewhere people could get a bite to eat and get something to drink…we were technically at the beach after all. The nearby park would become our village filled with food trucks and a bar!

Fast forward 6 months and the inaugural event passed with flying colours. Welcoming 160+ competitors, we nailed our goals and gave a big fat green tick to our event brief!

It’s only up from here ladies and gentlemen, stay tuned this is going to be epic!
